I wrote Haywire when I was making the decision to end a long term relationship. During that time my dad was facing life in prison and deep-seated trauma from my childhood was boiling up inside of me. My life was chaos and my head was a mess. My relationship did not stand a chance. The four years we created together was the furthest thing from my mind. The lyric “the love that kept us here, turns out it was only fear” describes how I knew I had to end it, but the fear of being alone seemed too scary, so I stayed. Being in the relationship knowing it was going to end made me feel like I was casually walking around my own funeral. I was trying to keep face and be polite, all while knowing it’s over. The relationship was dead and it was time to let go. The feelings I had for this person were washed away in the chaos. Every part of myself changed during that time and because I was already in so much pain, I started to become numb. I allowed myself to just feel numb and let go. It was the least tragic part of my life at the time. I had peace knowing that even though my life went Haywire, I could find strength in the pain to let go for both of us.
